Robert Roope is the designer of Black Eyewear glasses and sunglasses. He is also the driving force and owner of the RoopeVintage online store and Robert Roope Opticians.
The Yorkshire born, dispensing optician opened his optical practice Robert Roope Opticians in 1979 after ten years working at Moorfield Eye Hospital, Selfridges, and American Optical’s factories in South East Asia.
Robert Roope began designing eyewear in 1999, which coincided with the launch of his online vintage eyewear store, RoopeVintage.com. His design inspirations came from glasses and sunglasses of the 1950s, which formed the core of his private collection.
Vintage by Robert Roope started as an online catalogue for Robert’s private collection of original vintage and retro glasses and sunglasses in 1999. Soon the worldwideweb began to grow and with it, the amount of online customers in search of unusual eyewear designs.
Robert Roope’s vintage eyewear collection is probably one of the largest worldwide. The styles range from the 1920s to the 1980s. All pieces are unique, unworn and can be fitted with modern prescription lenses.
Demand became so overwhelming that Vintage by Robert Roope now also offers a large collection of repro frames from this period which have been made in more contemporary colours and sizes and have the advantage of being made of softer materials and more comfortable to wear.
As a life long jazz fan, Robert Roope’s frame designs began to resonate with the eyewear worn by many of the Jazz musicians of the 50s. As a token of his admiration for their music, Robert Roope decided to dedicate each of his designs to a jazz great like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane etc. The brand ‘Black Eyewear’ was created. To date, Black Eyewear consists of more than 50 designs of glasses and sunglasses, each design is unique but the vintage essence can be seen and felt in every model, making them extremely contemporary in the current fashion.
